Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted the significance of traditional attire, handicrafts, and indigenous skills in preserving the history and cultural heritage of Northeastern people. These practices and artistic expressions serve as vital repositories of the region’s identity and collective memory. Lalduhoma, while inaugurating the ‘Zo Fair’ in Aizawl, praised the products on display for reflecting centuries of inherited craftsmanship and cultural traditions.
Modern technology may facilitate mass production, but Lalduhoma stressed the manual labor and cultural value embedded in traditional handcrafted goods. He urged artisans to take pride in their skills, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship as part of the community’s identity. The Chief Minister noted a growing appreciation and demand for these products beyond local communities, indicating expanding market opportunities.
Acknowledging the efforts of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, TRIFED, and related departments in conserving and promoting tribal and forest-based products, Lalduhoma welcomed participants to Mizoram. He encouraged them to engage with the local community, experience Mizo hospitality, and explore the region. The ‘Zo Fair,’ jointly organized by TRIFED and the Cooperation Department of Mizoram, showcases a diverse array of traditional handicrafts and indigenous products from the Northeast.
Rural Development Minister Lalnilawma highlighted the prosperity brought by the cooperative movement and expressed optimism for similar success in Mizoram. He emphasized the need for self-reliance in every village to realize the vision of Viksit Mizoram 2047, a goal championed by the Chief Minister. TRIFED Regional Manager P.S. Thuingaleng commended Mizoram’s Van Dhan Vikas Kendras for their performance but suggested enhancing product packaging for better market appeal.
The fair, hosting 25 stalls featuring various northeastern states and Mizoram, facilitates direct interaction between producers and buyers. It includes Tribal Food Cuisine stalls, handwoven textiles, bamboo products, and natural produce displays. Designed to promote trade without intermediaries, the fair will run throughout the week.
