Guwahati, Aug 1 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the state’s flood relief operations have been further intensified, with the number of relief distribution centres rising to 1,811 as the government continues efforts to provide assistance, rehabilitation and restore normalcy in the flood-ravaged areas.

Sharing the latest flood situation on social media, the Chief Minister said relief operations are being expanded across the state to reach affected families.

According to the official flood bulletin covering the period from April 29 to July 31 (11:59 p.m.), floods have affected 25 districts, 77 revenue circles and 2,251 villages across Assam. More than 11.45 lakh people have been impacted by the floods, while 218 relief camps are currently sheltering 71,889 displaced persons. The state has also established 1,811 relief distribution centres to ensure the supply of food, drinking water and other essential items to affected residents.

The bulletin stated that 82 people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents during the current flood season. Sivasagar has reported the highest number of fatalities at 42, followed by Charaideo (21), Jorhat (9), Dhemaji (3), Golaghat (3), Karbi Anglong (2), Sonitpur (1) and Kamrup (1).

Two persons remain missing, one each from Sivasagar and Dhemaji districts.

Floodwaters have also caused widespread damage to residential properties, with 2,530 houses reported to be fully damaged and another 9,668 partially damaged. A total of 29,985 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas as rescue and relief operations continue.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government’s priority remains relief, rehabilitation and restoring normalcy in the affected regions, while officials continue to monitor the flood situation and provide assistance to displaced families.

The flood season, which began in late April, has affected large parts of Upper Assam, Central Assam and several districts in western Assam, causing extensive damage to infrastructure, agriculture and residential areas.
