Defender Noussair Mazraoui praised Morocco’s unwavering belief and composure in their dramatic comeback against the Netherlands, securing a spot in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a penalty shootout win. Despite trailing to Cody Gakpo’s goal, Morocco stayed calm, equalizing in stoppage time through Issa Diop before triumphing in the shootout, with Ismael Saibari scoring the decisive penalty after a crucial save by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

“We maintained our composure throughout the game, even in the final moments. We didn’t panic, even when they defended deep. In the end, Issa Diop scored a fantastic header from Chemsdine Talbi’s brilliant pass,” Mazraoui shared with FIFA post-match.

Mazraoui highlighted the significance of the victory, especially against a formidable opponent. “It was a tough match against a strong rival. They are among the top teams globally and contenders for the World Cup. Winning today reflects the hard work we’ve put in as a national team,” he remarked.

Despite the Dutch tactical approach, Morocco controlled possession in the second half, with Mazraoui attributing this partly to the Netherlands’ strategy. “They aimed to counter-attack and let us have the ball,” he explained. While the Dutch scored first from a counter-attack, Morocco leveled the score to force penalties.

Following their impressive fourth-place finish in the 2022 World Cup, Morocco remains unbeaten in the 2026 tournament. Mazraoui emphasized the team’s focus on creating new achievements rather than dwelling on past success. “Each World Cup is unique. We aim to showcase our capabilities anew. We are on the right path as a federation and a team, staying humble,” he stated.

Morocco’s next challenge is against co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 on July 4, with Mazraoui anticipating another tough encounter. “Facing Canada will be difficult. They are in good form, possess quality players, and present a tough task as we strive for success,” he added.
