Moscow expressed disappointment over the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) choice to uphold sanctions against Russian athletes, as stated by Kremlin spokesperson Dimitry Peskov. Peskov conveyed regret regarding the IOC’s decision to maintain the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee’s membership and sanctions against Russian athletes. Russia intends to engage in discussions with the IOC concerning the reinstatement of its athletes in global sports.
The IOC decided to retain the punitive measures, citing concerns such as an investigation by the World Anti-Doping Agency into Russia’s anti-doping system. In contrast, the IOC recommended lifting all restrictions for Belarusian athletes participating in international competitions. The IOC Executive Board eliminated any conditions for Belarusian athletes, including teams, in events overseen by International Federations and international sports organizers.
This action was part of the IOC’s effort to navigate a complex geopolitical environment and uphold its mission of providing a values-based sporting platform. The decision aligns with the ‘Fit for the Future’ process initiated by IOC president Kirsty Coventry in September 2025, emphasizing athletes’ right to access sport without political interference.
