Muharram was peacefully observed in various districts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot, with traditional Tazia processions held amidst tight security measures. In Ahmedabad, processions followed designated routes in the old city under heavy police presence and traffic diversions. Authorities ensured security by setting up barricades at critical points and enhancing surveillance through CCTV systems and drone monitoring to manage crowds and maintain order.
Surat saw well-organized processions starting from approved areas, with organizers strictly adhering to prescribed route guidelines and Tazia specifications. Over 7,000 security personnel were stationed across the city, utilizing drones and CCTV cameras for thorough monitoring of activities. Similarly, Vadodara and Rajkot also witnessed peaceful processions, with additional police forces deployed in sensitive areas and key intersections to oversee gatherings and facilitate the smooth flow of religious events.
Senior officers oversaw the operational arrangements on the ground, with the Gujarat Police implementing a comprehensive security plan ahead of Muharram. A total of 919 sensitive locations were identified for heightened surveillance and preventive policing measures across the state. A high-level review meeting, led by the Director General of Police (DGP), G.S. Malik, was conducted at Police Bhavan earlier this week, with Police Commissioners, Range Heads, and District Superintendents virtually reviewing preparedness.
During the meeting, officers were instructed to boost intelligence gathering, increase patrols in sensitive zones, and ensure synchronized deployment along procession routes. District units were directed to assess risks in areas with previous Muharram-related incidents and maintain real-time monitoring through technological means. Security measures included the deployment of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) units, local police, and rapid response teams at strategic locations. The collaborative policing approach, supported by organizers and community leaders, resulted in the peaceful conclusion of Muharram processions across Gujarat without any significant disturbances.
