As the iconic movie “Gunda” celebrated its 28th anniversary in 2026, Mukesh Rishi, known for his role as the quirky villain “Bulla,” shared his thoughts on the film’s unexpected popularity. Initially unsure about his involvement in the 1998 movie directed by Kanti Shah, Rishi now acknowledges the humor that resonates with audiences.
Rishi recalled his initial doubts, stating, “When we were doing it, I felt like it was not going well, or I shouldn’t have been in this film.” However, with the passage of time, the film, featuring actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Mohan Joshi, Shakti Kapoor, and Harish Patel, garnered a cult following, particularly for its humor and memorable dialogues.
Reflecting on the enduring appeal of his character Bulla, Rishi credits writer Bashir Babbar for crafting the distinctive style. He emphasized the collaborative effort in bringing the characters to life, highlighting the unique traits of each actor’s role in the film. Rishi praised Babbar’s writing, acknowledging the impact of the well-crafted lines that contributed to the film’s success.
Mukesh Rishi expressed gratitude towards the writer for guiding the actors in delivering their lines effectively, attributing much of the film’s charm to the script. With a storyline centered around a coolie seeking revenge against a crime lord, “Gunda” has amassed a dedicated fan base over the years, with significant sales of VCD copies and a re-release in 2018.
