Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai has received the prestigious Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) Platinum – Class I Rating from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). This recognition signifies CSMIA’s dedication to sustainable waste management, diverting over 99% of waste from landfills through effective airport-wide systems. The airport now stands alongside other Indian airports handling more than 50 million passengers annually that have attained this certification.
CSMIA’s waste management practices were commended by the ZWL assessment for their efficiency in segregation, recycling, and recovery mechanisms. Key waste streams such as plastic waste, MSW wet and dry, and other recyclables have been successfully diverted from landfills. The assessment, conducted in FY2025-26, aligns with the goal of maximizing waste diversion while minimizing overall generation.
The airport’s primary waste sources include food, plastic, paper, and operational waste. CSMIA has adopted a robust approach based on the 5R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, Recover) to significantly reduce landfill dependency and enhance waste recovery. This approach involves segregation at source, recycling, continuous waste reduction, and monitoring, facilitated by a dedicated Environment and Sustainability team and well-structured infrastructure for waste collection and transfer.
CSMIA’s achievement adds to its global sustainability leadership, including ACA Level 5 Carbon accreditation. The airport has intensified its sustainability efforts by transitioning to 100% renewable energy, boosting energy efficiency by more than 40%, electrifying its ground fleet, implementing energy-efficient technologies, and enhancing ESG governance. This milestone underscores CSMIA’s commitment to building a sustainable aviation ecosystem for the future.
