In a significant move against cyber fraud, the Mumbai Police uncovered an organized online scam involving the sale of counterfeit health insurance policies. Twelve individuals have been arrested, and fake call centers have been dismantled, with various digital devices seized.
The fraud involved deceiving people online by offering fake health insurance schemes. The police raided three fake call centers linked to the scam, seizing assets totaling over Rs 17 lakh, including computers, laptops, mobile phones, and gold coins.
The investigation began after a victim reported being approached by fraudsters posing as representatives from HDFC ERGO health insurance. The scammers falsely promised a ‘No Claim Bonus’ of Rs 1,53,825 and tricked the victim into revealing credit card details, resulting in a fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.43 lakh.
The arrested individuals targeted HDFC health insurance policyholders, obtaining their data and SIM cards to drain their bank accounts. Three more individuals involved in supplying data and SIM cards have also been apprehended.
The police are expanding their probe to ascertain the full extent of the scam and identify other culprits. They advise the public to remain vigilant against insurance-related fraud and urge victims to report cyber fraud to the national cybercrime helpline or local authorities.
