Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio highlighted the significance of Naga traditional wrestling, stating that it embodies the identity, heritage, and resilience of the Naga people. Speaking at the 30th Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship and 1st Wrestling Festival 2026, Rio praised the sport as a cultural legacy passed down through generations, symbolizing not just physical prowess but also values like character, discipline, and integrity.
He lauded the role of the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) in preserving and promoting this indigenous sport while maintaining its traditional essence. Rio expressed delight in seeing the sport’s expansion beyond its original Tenyimi area to other parts of the state, uniting people through shared culture and identity. The Chief Minister encouraged wrestlers to embody Naga culture and strive for excellence, urging a balance between tradition and progress.
Rio affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and supporting indigenous games alongside modern disciplines. He announced financial aid from the Chief Minister’s Sports Fund for six wrestling associations, emphasizing the state’s dedication to nurturing young athletes for regional, national, and international competitions. The event was graced by dignitaries including Deputy Chief Ministers, the Nagaland Assembly Speaker, and the President of the Wrestling Federation of India.
