When Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased the International kite festival to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the Sabarmati riverfront in Gujarat, the event gained global attention. The festival, held annually in Gujarat, signifies Uttarayan, a significant period in the Hindu calendar representing longer days. Initially a local celebration, the kite festival was propelled onto the global stage in the early 2000s under the leadership of then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
Under Modi’s guidance, Gujarat’s ‘Patangotsav’ transitioned from a regional event to a global spectacle, with the foundation laid during his tenure as Chief Minister. In 2002, Modi, as the newly appointed CM, celebrated Makar Sankranti during Uttarayan with local families in Ahmedabad, as shared by Modi Archive, a popular social media account.
In 2004, Chief Minister Modi inaugurated the International Kite festival, elevating the traditional event into a worldwide cultural extravaganza. The kite flying industry, once a small cottage business, saw significant growth due to the state government’s efforts under Narendra Modi, creating employment opportunities and fostering cultural pride.
Modi’s initiatives as Gujarat CM, including financial support, training in modern techniques, packaging, and quality control, boosted the kite-making sector’s competitiveness. The success of the festival demonstrated that strategic planning and community-focused actions could turn a local industry into a global success story.
By 2014, the kite-making industry was sustaining numerous families, expanding to multiple cities and attracting international kite-fliers from various countries to Gujarat. With over 70% of artisans being women, the festival brought transformative changes by integrating them into the mainstream economy and supporting their progress.
Today, ‘Patangotsav’ serves as a platform for engaging international stakeholders, diplomats, and a global audience, symbolizing empowerment, economic development, and Gujarat’s prominence on the global platform.
