In Srinagar, the ruling National Conference (NC) legislators, under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership, have decided to stage a protest during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament in New Delhi. The protest aims to advocate for the restoration of statehood and other constitutional guarantees to J&K. The decision was made after a day-long meeting at Dachigam National Park, where NC ministers, MPs, MLAs, and party allies gathered for discussions.
NC officials, including ministers, MPs, and MLAs, accompanied by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, convened for the meeting after boarding buses on Gupkar Road in Srinagar. The exact venue of the meeting was kept undisclosed until the last moment, leaving the media in suspense about their destination. Following the meeting, NC’s chief spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq, informed the press that the discussions were conducted amicably, with the Chief Minister attentively listening to the legislators.
It was unanimously agreed during the meeting that NC members of the legislature will stage a protest in Delhi, either at Jantar Mantar or another chosen location, on the first day of Parliament’s monsoon session. The primary focus of the protest will be to demand the restoration of statehood and other constitutional rights for J&K. Additionally, various other issues were deliberated upon, including concerns related to drug abuse, alcohol, the Pir Panjal region, Chenab Valley, and developmental matters. The Chief Minister actively engaged in detailed discussions on these topics with the legislators.
The meeting was attended not only by NC members but also by CPI(M) legislator Yusuf Tarigami and five independent MLAs who support the NC-led government in J&K. While the Congress, with six MLAs in the J&K Assembly, extends support to the NC government externally, its MLAs were not part of the meeting.
