NCP legislators have formally decided to appoint Sunetra Pawar, the wife of late Ajit Pawar, as the national president. This decision comes after Ajit Pawar’s tragic death in a plane crash on January 28. Sunetra Pawar is set to accept the responsibility during a national executive meeting in Mumbai on February 26.
The party meeting, chaired by Sunetra Pawar, saw unanimous support for her leadership. She was elected as the legislature party leader on January 31 and has been authorized to decide on the merger with the Sharad Pawar faction. The focus of the meeting was on party organization, presidential selection, and the upcoming budget session of the state legislature starting on February 23.
Sunetra Pawar, in an emotional speech, expressed her commitment to keeping the party united and strong. The legislators assured their support to her in strengthening the party organization and carrying forward Ajit Pawar’s legacy. The meeting took place amidst discussions about a possible merger or reunification, with conflicting claims from different factions within the NCP.
Party leaders like Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, and Chhagan Bhujbal highlighted Ajit Pawar’s contributions to the party’s growth and expansion across the state. Despite debates over the merger, the NCP leadership emphasized unity and continuity within the party. The state NCP SP chief announced the closure of merger talks, citing Ajit Pawar’s passing as a pivotal factor.
