The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has taken a significant step to address concerns regarding teacher education standards by deploying a five-member fact-finding team to investigate serious irregularities at three BEd colleges in Madhya Pradesh. The committee, established on July 15 in response to media reports, is looking into questionable practices at colleges affiliated with Barkatullah University. Authorities discovered a fourth college operating from the same location during initial checks, raising suspicions of fake addresses and inadequate facilities.
Led by H.C.S. Rathore, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of South Bihar, the committee includes officials like Ashima Mangla from the University Grants Commission (UGC), two directors from the Ministry of Education, a Madhya Pradesh government nominee, and NCTE’s Regional Director Wg Cdr Vijay Rana. The team, which arrived in the state on July 17, has commenced inspections and will conduct thorough physical verifications using geo-tagged photos and videos to assess the actual situation. Their assessments will focus on infrastructure, laboratories, land records, faculty strength, and adherence to NCTE norms, comparing on-site findings with submitted documents and Performance Appraisal Reports (PARs) to ensure compliance with legal requirements under the NCTE Act and regulations.
NCTE officials are approaching the matter with utmost seriousness, emphasizing that any violations will result in severe punitive measures after a comprehensive review. The regulatory body has expressed strong concern over the issue, labeling it as a serious lapse and warning of strict consequences for non-compliant institutions. The formation of this high-powered committee underscores NCTE’s commitment to enhancing the credibility of teacher training programs. The investigation’s outcome is eagerly anticipated, as it could establish a precedent for similar inspections nationwide and drive significant reforms in the regulation and monitoring of BEd colleges.
