National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar visited the KEM Hospital in Mumbai to review the operations of the government-run One Stop Centre for women affected by violence. Rahatkar interacted with the staff during her visit and provided suggestions to improve the Centre’s services.
She expressed satisfaction with the facilities at the One Stop Centre, including the medical room, counselling room, temporary shelter, and the overall pleasant environment. Rahatkar also offered appropriate suggestions to address necessary shortcomings in the operations of the Centre.
One Stop Centres (OSCs) aim to assist women impacted by violence in various settings, such as private and public spaces, within families, communities, and workplaces. These government-funded centres provide support and redressal to women facing physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse, regardless of various demographics.
Rahatkar’s visit to the One Stop Centre at KEM Hospital coincides with her proposal to recommend a complete prohibition on parole for individuals convicted of rape, aggravated sexual assault, and other serious crimes against women and children. The Commission may suggest amendments to prison and parole regulations to exclude certain categories of offences from eligibility for parole or temporary release.
Expressing concerns following a recent sexual assault case in Pune district, Rahatkar emphasized the need to prioritize the protection, dignity, and security of women and children. The incident underscored the importance of public safety and the confidence of women and girls in society, prompting discussions on additional safeguards and measures to enhance safety.
