National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar recently visited Tihar Jail to assess the conditions and programs for women inmates. She highlighted the importance of upholding their dignity, safety, mental well-being, and opportunities for rehabilitation. Rahatkar praised Tihar authorities for their efforts, stating that the jail serves as a model for prison reforms.
During her visit, Rahatkar inspected various facilities within the jail, including living quarters, vocational training centers, medical services, and recreational areas. She interacted with the women inmates to evaluate the effectiveness of the rehabilitation and skill development initiatives. Emphasis was placed on empowering the inmates through education, vocational training, counseling, and mental health support to facilitate their social reintegration.
Rahatkar also visited the One Stop Centre at KEM Hospital in Mumbai, which caters to women affected by violence. She engaged with the staff and provided recommendations to enhance the services offered at the center. Her visit aimed to ensure that the facilities and support systems in place adequately address the needs of women seeking assistance.
