The National Commission for Women (NCW) has reacted to distressing reports of an acid attack and severe domestic abuse against a woman in Pune. Allegedly, the woman’s husband poured acid on her private parts suspecting infidelity, confined her, and denied medical aid. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has urged the Maharashtra DGP to take swift and strict action in this case.
The NCW has demanded a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) within a week. They specifically seek details on the FIR, legal provisions applied, progress of the investigation, suspect’s arrest, survivor’s medical treatment, and recovery of the chemical used. Additionally, they want information on ensuring the safety, protection, and rehabilitation of the survivor and her children.
Expressing strong condemnation, the NCW emphasized that crimes like acid attacks and domestic violence demand the harshest legal response. The incident occurred in Pune’s Uruli Kanchan area, where a man allegedly attacked his wife with acid and kept her confined for almost 15 days.
The unfortunate event unfolded on April 20 when the husband, inebriated, accused his wife of infidelity, leading to a violent altercation. Frustrated over having daughters, he reportedly assaulted her with acid, causing severe pain. The victim endured days without medical care until she escaped and sought help from her relatives, prompting police involvement in the case.
