New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal revealed the NDMC Monsoon Action Plan-2026 to enhance civic services during the rainy season and reduce waterlogging. The plan aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for smart and technology-driven urban governance, aiming to offer improved civic amenities to residents.
The comprehensive Action Plan encompasses pre-monsoon preparations, emergency protocols for rainfall, and post-monsoon infrastructure restoration. By March 31, the NDMC had completed 100% of the initial desilting work, with the second phase set for completion by June 15.
NDMC has initiated GIS mapping of underground drainage systems, including various components like bell mouths and manholes, to enhance monitoring and planning in waterlogging-prone areas. The team is diligently working round the clock to ensure a hassle-free experience for citizens during the monsoon season.
Efforts include thorough cleaning and desilting of drains, stormwater channels, and gully traps, alongside repairing damaged infrastructure like roads and drainage systems. The installation of CCTV cameras and sensor-based monitoring systems at key vulnerable points in the NDMC area is underway to facilitate swift action during heavy rainfall.
Utilizing advanced technology, NDMC has introduced robotic inspection of underground and covered stormwater drains for the first time near Taj Mansingh. This innovative approach aids in identifying silt accumulation, blockages, and damaged sections to mitigate water stagnation issues.
Desilting operations are being conducted using super sucker machines, with plans for robotic technology to cover approximately 3,200 meters of area next year. To address water accumulation concerns near Sarojini Nagar, NDMC has installed high-capacity pumps, with additional pumps scheduled for installation by June 15, 2026.
Awareness campaigns on monsoon safety, waterborne disease prevention, proper waste disposal, and debris avoidance in drains are being actively promoted by NDMC. Moreover, tree pruning and branch removal initiatives are ongoing to prevent accidents during storms and heavy rainfall.
