When 2025 began, Nepal had a strong government led by the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). However, after three governments in one-and-a-half years, the two major parties united under UML Chair K P Sharma Oli in July 2024.
The super-majority government faced corruption allegations and crumbled in the face of the Gen-Z movement in September 2025. The movement, triggered by a violent crackdown resulting in 77 deaths, forced Oli to resign within 24 hours.
The Gen-Z movement led to the current interim government under Sushila Karki, the dissolution of the House of Representatives, and upcoming elections on March 5. The protests also sparked calls for top leaders of traditional parties to step down.
