Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has resigned following the team’s elimination in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by Morocco. This marks the end of his second term as the manager of the Dutch national team. Koeman initially took charge in early 2018, with his first tenure lasting until mid-2020.
In early 2023, after the World Cup in Qatar where the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals, Koeman returned for a second spell as the national team coach. Expressing his decision to step down, Koeman mentioned his disappointment at not achieving the World Cup success they had hoped for. He emphasized the importance of health over football in a statement shared on Instagram.
During his leadership, the Dutch national team qualified for three major tournaments: Euro 2021, Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup. Notably, the Oranje reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 but were defeated by England. Koeman also guided the team to the final of the UEFA Nations League in 2019 during his first stint as the national coach.
The Royal Dutch Football Association has confirmed that Koeman will not extend his contract as the head coach of the Netherlands national team. Koeman expressed gratitude for the dedication of the coaching staff and players, acknowledging that the decision was not easy due to the strong bond he shares with the team. He highlighted the need to spend more time with his family as the main reason for his resignation.
Nigel de Jong, the technical director of the Dutch football association, respected Koeman’s decision, recognizing his significant contributions to the national team. De Jong thanked Koeman on behalf of the KNVB for his commitment and positive impact on the team.
