New Delhi Municipal Council Chairman Keshav Chandra designated Sangli Apartments on Copernicus Marg as an ‘Anupam Colony’ for its outstanding waste management and sustainability practices. The certification is awarded to colonies meeting high standards of zero-waste and self-sustainable living. Sangli Apartments has achieved nearly 100% source segregation, ensuring active household participation in responsible waste management.
Chandra emphasized the significance of the initiative at Sangli Apartments in enhancing community-led environmental stewardship and fostering a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable New Delhi. He praised the residents’ enthusiasm, energy, and proactive involvement, highlighting their crucial role in achieving this milestone in a short period. Previously, the NDMC had recognized other residential complexes and colonies, including Jor Bagh, New Moti Bagh, and Satya Sadan Officers’ Flats, with the title of ‘Anupam Colony.’
To further promote citizen engagement and responsible waste disposal practices, most ‘Anupam Colonies’ feature an RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Centre for residents to donate items like clothes and books for reuse. Moreover, these colonies have installed a plastic waste collection-cum-vending machine to encourage the return of plastic bottles, fostering a culture of conscious waste segregation and recycling at the source. Organic Waste Converters (OWCs) treat wet waste from households to produce compost for maintaining parks, while horticulture waste is converted into eco-friendly briquettes, establishing a waste-to-wealth model.
