Strengthening New Delhi’s green ecosystem, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairman Keshav Chandra spearheaded a Mega Plantation Drive–2026 at 34 locations within the council’s jurisdiction. The initiative, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, involved planting over 612 trees and 50,200 shrubs of native and ornamental varieties in green spaces. To ensure successful implementation, more than 50,000 plantation pits were prepared in advance.
The campaign focused on planting ecologically significant native tree species like Peepal, Neem, Jamun, and ornamental shrubs such as Hamelia and Lily. NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal emphasized the drive’s aim to expand green cover, enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, and create visually appealing public spaces. The initiative received active participation from various groups, showcasing a collaborative effort for a greener and healthier environment.
Public representatives, Resident Welfare Associations, Market Traders Associations, and local residents actively participated in the campaign. Delhi government and New Delhi legislator Parvesh Verma, along with Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj, planted saplings at different parks. NDMC members also joined in, reinforcing the council’s commitment to environmental conservation. The NDMC presently maintains significant green areas, contributing substantially to Delhi’s green cover.
The Mega Plantation Drive–2026 underscores NDMC’s dedication to environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and sustainable urban development. By engaging the community and expanding green infrastructure, the NDMC aims to create a cleaner, healthier, and greener national capital for current and future generations.
