Newly appointed Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, is scheduled to take the oath of office and secrecy on Wednesday at 1:30 pm at Lok Niwas. The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court will administer the oath, officially appointing him as the 23rd Lieutenant Governor of the national capital.
Outgoing Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has been designated as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and is expected to assume charge on Friday. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a former Indian diplomat, previously served as India’s Ambassador to the US from February 2020 to January 31, 2024.
Sandhu, who joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1988, is recognized for his role in establishing the Indian Embassy in Ukraine. He has held various significant diplomatic positions, including First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Washington and Consul General of India in Frankfurt.
After retiring from the IFS, Sandhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party shortly before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He contested as the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Amritsar against Congress leader Gurjit Singh Aujla. Taranjit Singh Sandhu completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and later pursued his Master of Arts (MA) from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi.
Delhi’s current Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has been appointed as Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, replacing Kavinder Gupta, who has been named Himachal Pradesh Governor. These appointments will come into effect when the respective officials assume their new roles, as stated by Rashtrapati Bhavan.
