Senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh has taken charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, highlighting the need for enhanced cooperation with other law enforcement agencies and the importance of impartiality, neutrality, and professionalism in public service. Singh emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts among security and law enforcement bodies, along with fair policing, to maintain peace, security, and public trust in the state. Following a ceremonial reception, Singh held a brief meeting with senior police officials at the Police Headquarters in Imphal to discuss key policing priorities and stress the values of professionalism, adherence to the Constitution, coordination with sister agencies, and impartiality in serving the public.
Singh, an IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, succeeded DGP Rajiv Singh, marking a crucial leadership change in Manipur’s police force during ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the region. Before his assignment in Manipur, Mukesh Singh served as the Director General of Police in Ladakh, assuming the position on January 15, 2026. Rajiv Singh, who previously held the position, was appointed Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat after serving in various capacities in Tripura and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The handover of leadership from Rajiv Singh to Mukesh Singh comes amidst a challenging period in Manipur’s recent history, characterized by ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. Mukesh Singh, a Civil Engineering graduate from IIT Delhi, joined the IPS in 1996 and has undertaken sensitive assignments in Jammu and Kashmir, including roles as Superintendent of Police in areas affected by militancy and insurgency-related operations. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Singh’s transfer to Manipur on inter-cadre deputation for a three-year term.
The ethnic conflict in Manipur has resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of thousands, and widespread disruption to daily life in both hill and valley districts.
