Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant recently administered the oath of office to five new judges of the Supreme Court. Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and senior advocate V. Mohana were appointed to the apex court following the Centre’s approval based on the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation.
The Centre endorsed the elevation of the four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate Mohana to the Supreme Court after considering the Collegium’s recommendations from meetings held on May 22 and May 27. Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal shared the appointments on social media platform X after the President’s consultation with the CJI.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointments of the new judges in its meetings held on May 22 and May 27, 2026, as announced on the apex court’s website. Justices Nagu, Chandrashekhar, Sachdeva, and Palli have notable backgrounds, having served in various High Courts before their elevation to the Supreme Court.
Justice Nagu, who previously served in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, assumed office as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Similarly, Justice Chandrashekhar and Justice Sachdeva held positions in different High Courts before their recent appointments to the apex court. Justice Palli, who served in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
Senior advocate Mohana, known for handling constitutional, civil, and service law matters before the Supreme Court, also took the oath as a judge. The oath ceremony follows the recent increase in the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the CJI, as per the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026.
