The inauguration of a new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in Kolathur attracted political interest as Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor R. Priya attended the event. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan, inaugurated the passport service center, emphasizing enhanced passport services for North Chennai residents. The POPSK at Kolathur Post Office is part of the government’s initiative to expand citizen services through the postal network.
Murugan highlighted the evolution of post offices into integrated public service centers offering various services like banking, insurance, and Aadhaar enrollment. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring efficient public service delivery at the grassroots level. The Minister also mentioned the success of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system in improving transparency and financial inclusion through initiatives like Jan Dhan accounts.
India’s progress in digital transactions and the simplification of governance through the repeal of obsolete laws were also discussed during the inauguration ceremony. Murugan handed over the first passport issued by the new POPSK to the parents of a six-month-old infant. Notable attendees included North Chennai MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy, Kolathur MLA V.S. Babu, and officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and the postal service.
Mayor Priya’s presence at the Union government event sparked political discussions due to her recent absence from state government programs. Despite missing events attended by the Chief Minister, her participation in the inauguration raised curiosity about her public appearances amidst evolving political dynamics in the state.
