When Periyar Arivulagam opens next month in Coimbatore, it will be one of Tamil Nadu’s largest public library complexes, offering traditional library services along with interactive science-based learning. Costing Rs 301 crore, this eight-storey building will accommodate over 1.2 lakh books, serving as a public library and a science learning center. The project, managed by the Public Works Department, covers seven acres and is nearly 90% complete in terms of civil works.
The librarian at the District Central Library, R.S. Puram, G. Ramesh, described Periyar Arivulagam as one of the most advanced libraries in the state. With features like air-conditioned reading halls and dedicated learning zones, it is poised to greatly improve public access to knowledge. The facility is expected to attract a large number of students, researchers, and the general public.
Funds allocated for the project include Rs 245 crore for civil construction, Rs 50 crore for book procurement, and Rs 5 crore for IT and digital infrastructure. The building, spanning 1.98 lakh sq ft, has obtained all necessary clearances, including approval from airport authorities. Coimbatore Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar emphasized the inclusive design of the complex, with a floor dedicated to persons with disabilities, featuring wheelchair access and Braille books.
Public Works Minister E.V. Velu recently inspected the construction progress and commended the government’s focus on knowledge infrastructure. Drawing parallels with the successful Kalaignar Centenary Library, he highlighted the importance of such facilities in promoting education. Named after social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, the center aims to continue his legacy of advocating rational thinking and social awareness. The Chief Minister is expected to inaugurate the facility between February 10 and 28, pending final approvals.
