New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani stirred controversy by initially vowing to arrest Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited the city, only to retract his statement later. Mamdani, in a video message, labeled Netanyahu a “war criminal” but admitted lacking the legal authority to carry out the arrest, despite using the threat for political gain. The Mayor acknowledged that New York City does not possess the necessary legal power to enforce the International Criminal Court’s warrant against Netanyahu for war crimes.

Mamdani’s repeated campaign promise resurfaced during a recent interview, reigniting the debate. Israel’s UN Representative Danny Danon dismissed Mamdani’s remarks as baseless and labeled him a “clown.” Danon suggested that the Mayor focus on addressing local issues like homelessness and sanitation rather than making unfounded statements about harassing world leaders. President Donald Trump dismissed the arrest threats against Netanyahu and imposed sanctions on ICC judges and officials for targeting the US and Israel.

Despite Mamdani’s call for the federal government to execute the ICC warrant, the US, a non-member of the ICC, opposes such actions vehemently. Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a campaign against the ICC, expressing concerns about US personnel facing foreign prosecution. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche criticized the ICC for alleged misconduct and selective enforcement, questioning its impartiality and legitimacy. A former New York police officer highlighted the impracticality of arresting Netanyahu due to his extensive security detail and the formidable challenges city police would face.
