New Zealand has moved up to the second spot in the ICC World Test Championship rankings following a commanding 323-run victory over the West Indies in the final Test at Mount Maunganui. This win propelled New Zealand above South Africa, positioning them just behind Australia in the WTC standings.
The Black Caps will now gear up for a three-match series against England in the middle of next year. Meanwhile, the West Indies, currently placed ninth in the table, will face Sri Lanka and Pakistan in upcoming matches on home soil.
The match concluded at Bay Oval with left-arm seamer Jacob Duffy taking the final wicket, sealing the victory for New Zealand. Duffy’s exceptional performance throughout the series earned him the Player of the Series award, with standout figures of 5/42 in the West Indies’ second innings.
Duffy’s remarkable display also saw him surpass a significant national milestone by breaking Richard Hadlee’s record for the most wickets by a New Zealander in a calendar year. His pivotal role in New Zealand’s 2-0 series triumph and a strong start to their World Test Championship campaign was evident.
Reflecting on his achievement, Duffy expressed his gratitude, stating, “To be up there on any sort of list with those sort of names was special.” The bowlers’ efforts were complemented by a stellar batting performance, notably by openers Devon Conway and captain Tom Latham. Conway’s double century and century in the same Test match marked a historic feat, making him the first New Zealander and the 10th player overall to achieve this milestone.
Conway’s outstanding contributions earned him the Player of the Match award, with the opener expressing his elation, “It will take some time for me to get my head around what happened in this Test match. But I’m really glad we got the win.”
