Uncapped players Kayley Knight and Nensi Patel have been selected to debut in the New Zealand Women’s squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Zimbabwe. The series, starting on February 24, will feature three T20Is and three ODIs to be played in Hamilton and Dunedin.
Knight, a former U19 T20 World Cup player, showcased her skills in the Super Smash league, taking 10 wickets at an impressive economy rate. Nensi Patel, an off-spin all-rounder, returns to the squad after being centrally contracted for the 2022-23 season, following a successful domestic performance.
Head Coach Ben Sawyer praised the duo, stating that both Knight and Patel have earned their spots in the squad due to their consistent performances. Patel will be a crucial spin option in the absence of another player, while Knight is seen as a promising seam bowler ready for the international stage.
The New Zealand Cricket Board announced that Molly Penfold will replace Knight in the ODI squad, forming a strong pace unit alongside Bree Illing, Jess Kerr, and Rosemary Mair. Melie Kerr will lead the team in her first stint as the permanent captain.
Experienced players Suzie Bates and Eden Carson are sidelined due to injuries, while Lea Tahuhu is focusing on preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Sophie Devine, on a casual contract, will also miss the upcoming series.
