As the dust settles on the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the focus in Maharashtra shifts to the upcoming decision on who will hold the prestigious position of Mayor in Mumbai. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the largest party in the elections, but the suspense lingers as political leaders await the crucial reservation lottery that will determine the Mayor’s post category.
Scheduled for January 22, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Mantralaya in Mumbai, the reservation lottery will assign the Mayor’s post to a specific category among Open, OBC, SC, ST, or women. Until this allocation is finalized, the race for the Mayor’s position remains wide open, with various possibilities on the horizon.
Political analysts have highlighted a strategic advantage for Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) faction. Before the elections, two wards were reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category, won by Shiv Sena (UBT) candidates. If the upcoming lottery reserves the Mayor’s post for the ST category, the Thackeray faction could secure the mayorship despite having fewer total seats, potentially altering the political landscape significantly.
The recently concluded BMC polls saw the BJP securing 89 seats, followed by Shiv Sena (UBT) with 65 seats, setting the stage for intense political maneuvering. The ongoing tension has sparked verbal exchanges among top leaders, reflecting the high stakes involved in the mayoral race and the power dynamics at play in Maharashtra’s political arena.
