Brazilian forward Neymar has suggested that the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 could be his final tournament. Brazil, set to participate for the 23rd time, holds the record for the most appearances in the global event. This edition will be unique as it will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
Neymar, aged 34, hinted at his retirement in response to a FIFA social media post showcasing his career highlights. In the comments section, he referred to it as “The last dance,” a phrase linked to NBA star Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls in 1997-98. The prolific striker, with 79 goals in 128 international games, has been sidelined due to various injuries, including a recent calf strain that may affect his participation in Brazil’s opening match against Morocco on June 13.
Having made his international debut at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Neymar quickly made an impact by scoring in his first game against the USA. Despite setbacks like a back injury during the 2014 World Cup and subsequent challenges at the 2018 tournament, he found success by winning Olympic gold in 2016. Neymar’s recent career includes a move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, where injuries have plagued his playing time.
