The National Highways Authority of India has launched technology-driven initiatives to modernize maintenance practices on National Highways and Expressways. These initiatives aim to enhance road quality, operational efficiency, and the overall travel experience for commuters. NHAI has introduced guidelines for mechanized maintenance of drainage systems in urban areas and the use of advanced road maintenance equipment like automatic pothole filling machines and road sweeping machines.
These measures are focused on strengthening preventive maintenance practices, improving upkeep quality, and ensuring strict compliance with maintenance contracts. The initiatives are expected to boost the sustainability of highway infrastructure and reduce inconvenience for road users. NHAI has mandated mechanized cleaning of drains in urban areas before the monsoon season to improve stormwater management and prevent waterlogging.
Contractors and concessionaires have been instructed to adhere to maintenance schedules and inspection programs for drainage systems. NHAI will closely monitor compliance with timelines for rectifying drainage-related issues to maintain road conditions. The authority has also included automatic pothole filling and road sweeping machines in the list of equipment to be used under Performance-Based Maintenance Contracts.
The incorporation of these technologies is aimed at accelerating pavement maintenance, reducing response times, and minimizing disruptions for highway users. NHAI anticipates that timely repairs facilitated by automated machines will enhance ride quality and preserve the structural integrity of road infrastructure.
