The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken action following complaints of gyms and fitness centers being used to exploit young women, including for forced religious conversion. Allegations point to an organized racket in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur, where over 50 women were reportedly targeted, with alleged involvement of a police official. This has raised concerns about abuse of authority and violations of human rights.
The complainant highlighted the existence of a criminal network disguised as fitness establishments, urging the NHRC to intervene. They seek an impartial investigation, protection for victims, action against involved police personnel, and nationwide guidelines for preventing such exploitation. The NHRC, noting potential human rights violations, has initiated proceedings under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
Chief Secretaries of states and UTs have been instructed to provide details on current guidelines for gyms. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India have also been asked for information on national policies and licensing requirements for such facilities. Additionally, authorities in Mirzapur are tasked with investigating the allegations, with responses due within two weeks for NHRC review.
