The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested a report from the Jharkhand government and district police chief regarding the recent death of a 19-year-old female inmate at a remand home in Deoghar. The NHRC acted based on a media report suggesting suspicious circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death on May 2. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Expressing concern over potential human rights violations, the NHRC has directed the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand and the Superintendent of Police in Deogarh to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The media report highlighted that the deceased inmate was taken to Deoghar Sadar Hospital after her condition worsened, where she later passed away during treatment.
In a separate incident, the NHRC also took notice of a media report detailing the deaths of two sanitation workers in Faridabad, Haryana, while cleaning a sewer without proper protective gear. The Commission has issued notices to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner and the Police Commissioner of Faridabad, seeking a comprehensive report within two weeks. The report is expected to cover the investigation status and compensation provided to the workers’ families.
Citing persistent safety lapses despite existing guidelines, the NHRC emphasized the need for mechanized cleaning with adequate safety measures for sanitation workers. The Commission stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
