The NHRC has demanded a report from Himachal Pradesh following allegations that 19 women students at a Nursing College in Shimla contracted tuberculosis. The Commission took notice of serious deficiencies in hostel management, sanitation, and institutional functioning during recent inspections. If the media report is accurate, it raises concerns about human rights violations.
The inspections revealed overcrowded, unhygienic living conditions at the hostel with poor food quality and inadequate sanitation. Students were reportedly compelled to work even during illness and denied proper rest. NHRC emphasized the gravity of the situation and called for corrective actions to be taken promptly.
In a separate incident, the NHRC is investigating the death of a 19-year-old woman at a remand home in Jharkhand. The death, under suspicious circumstances, prompted the Commission to seek a detailed report from the state authorities. The media report highlighted security concerns at the remand home following the deaths of multiple inmates since the beginning of 2026.
