The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a warning against imposters and NGOs that have registered themselves under names deceptively similar to it. All states have been directed to take action against such entities within two weeks. The NHRC recently discovered an NGO named ‘National Human Rights Council (NHRC)’ registered with the Government of NCT of Delhi in 2022, following complaints from individuals.
The deceptive NGO’s publicity material falsely claims registrations by various government bodies, including “Govt. of NITI Aayog” and “Ministry of Corporate Affairs, India.” The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter, emphasizing that the misleading nomenclature creates confusion and erodes public trust. The Commission is concerned that such deceptive names could lead to misuse of mandate, misappropriation of funds, and confusion for public authorities.
The NHRC has expressed ongoing concerns about the misuse of its name and logo, urging authorities to take action against those behind such dubious organizations. Notices have been issued to Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police of all states/UTs to identify and take legal action against NGOs or individuals misusing NHRC’s name. They are required to cancel registrations obtained in violation of norms and sensitize registering authorities to remain vigilant.
The Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in Karnataka and the Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Police in Delhi have been specifically directed to submit reports within two weeks on the action taken against the NGO operating in Karnataka but registered in Delhi.
