The National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended Samsul Islam, a Trinamool Congress Zilla Parishad office-bearer in East Midnapore district, West Bengal. Islam, associated with the health unit, was arrested in connection with rioting during cooperative bank office-bearer elections. The violence, involving crude bombs, occurred at a polling station in Nandigram, leaving BJP workers and local leaders injured.
Massive tension gripped the locality post the violence, prompting NIA’s involvement in the investigation. The agency had been monitoring the Zilla Parishad official’s role in the rioting. After being on the run, Islam was captured in a raid by NIA sleuths in East Midnapore district. He is set to appear in a district court in Haldia, where NIA is expected to seek custody for further interrogation.
NIA is also pursuing other associates of Islam involved in the rioting who are currently absconding. The agency aims to locate them through the arrested Trinamool Congress leader. Local residents welcomed Islam’s arrest, alleging his involvement in various illicit activities, including terrorizing the community, issuing threats, extortion, and misappropriation of Zilla Parishad funds.
