Nigeria has taken the lead in the medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow following an impressive performance in the initial sessions. Esther Nworgu and Esther Oyema of Nigeria clinched gold and silver respectively in the Women’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting event, while Roland Ezuruike secured silver in the Men’s Lightweight category earlier in the day.

With one gold and two silver medals, Nigeria currently holds the top spot on the medal table, while England follows in second place with one gold and one bronze. Malaysia stands third with one bronze medal. Mark Swan of England claimed the first gold medal of the games in a thrilling finish in the Men’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting event.

In a dramatic turn of events, Swan equaled Nigerian veteran Roland Ezuruike’s score going into the final round after lifting 222kg on his second attempt, showcasing exceptional strength. Malaysia’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, a two-time Paralympic champion and world record holder, narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing third.

The Men’s Lightweight category, which included athletes weighing up to 72kg, saw medals awarded based on a coefficient formula to ensure fair competition relative to the lifters’ body weights. The enthusiastic crowd, energized by Scottish actor Sam Heughan’s presence at the venue, provided a vibrant atmosphere for the athletes.

Athletes competing in the Men’s Lightweight category received tremendous support from the crowd, with Australian lifter Daniel Bos expressing his excitement at the electrifying atmosphere. Bos highlighted the adrenaline rush he experienced on stage, emphasizing the unique and surreal moments of the competition.
