Newly-crowned Bullet Chess Champion and Season 2 MVP, Nihal Sarin, has become a sought-after name as the Global Chess League (GCL) gears up for Season 4 in Bengaluru from September 3 to 13. The league’s player draft in Mumbai saw defending champions Alpine APL Pipers fortifying their team with Magnus Carlsen and Divya Deshmukh, while Viswanathan Anand switched teams to join PBG Alaskan Knights.

Season 4 of the Global Chess League, a collaboration between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, continues to emphasize India’s significance in the chess world. The league, which has previously been held in Dubai, London, and Mumbai, now moves to Bengaluru for its upcoming season.

Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, highlighted the league’s evolution as a premier event on the international chess calendar. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the essence of the sport while enhancing its global appeal and accessibility.

The player draft saw Fyers American Gambits securing Javokhir Sindarov and later winning the bid for Nihal Sarin, who made history as the first Indian to win the Bullet Chess Championship. Sarin joins a talented team comprising players like Javokhir Sindarov, Daniil Dubov, and Sara Khadem.

The defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers, made significant moves by retaining Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri, along with adding top players like Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy. The team aims to maintain its dominance in the upcoming season.

Triveni Continental Kings, the runners-up from the previous season, focused on consistency by retaining Alireza Firouzja and welcoming new talents like Aravindh Chithambram and Pranav Venkatesh. The team is determined to challenge for the championship title in Season 4.

PBG Alaskan Knights introduced a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, including Viswanathan Anand and Arjun Erigaisi. The team’s roster also features promising newcomers like Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, reflecting a mix of past achievements and future potential.

Ganges Grandmasters made a strategic move by acquiring Levon Aronian and assembling a well-rounded team with a mix of established stars and rising talents. The franchise aims to make a strong impact in the upcoming season with its diverse lineup.

upGrad Mumba Masters maintained continuity by retaining key players like Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, while adding promising talents like Carissa Yip. The team’s focus on a balanced squad sets the stage for an exciting competition in Season 4.
