Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata has opposed the reappointment of Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh as trustees of the Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT). His vote, cast before the voting deadline, has led to the rejection of their continuation. The requirement for unanimous approval was not met, signaling the end of their terms.
Srinivasan and Singh are expected to step down from TEDT after completing their current tenures. This decision by Noel Tata, who typically aligns with senior trustees on governance matters, marks a significant departure. It comes amidst ongoing discussions on leadership and oversight within Tata Trusts.
TEDT, a significant charitable entity under Tata Trusts, manages various education-focused initiatives like scholarships and academic support programs. Although not having equity in Tata Sons, the trust oversees a substantial fund and holds a prominent position in the group’s philanthropic network.
This development coincides with broader governance deliberations within Tata Trusts. Senior trustees are reviewing issues related to representation on the Tata Sons board, the performance of select group companies, and future leadership matters. Discussions also involve the potential inclusion of former Titan Company Managing Director Bhaskar Bhat on the Tata Sons board.
Furthermore, the role of Srinivasan as a Tata Trusts nominee director on the Tata Sons board is reportedly under scrutiny. Trustees Mehli Mistry and J.N. Mistry had also voted against the proposals earlier. Meetings of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, initially planned for earlier this month, have been rescheduled for May 16.
