North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) announced that its aircraft will soon be at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland to assist in a series of prearranged activities. These aircraft will work alongside other assets from bases in the United States and Canada, as part of the longstanding defense cooperation between these countries and the Kingdom of Denmark. NORAD has coordinated these activities with Denmark and ensured that all supporting forces have the necessary diplomatic clearances, with Greenland’s government duly informed.
NORAD highlighted that it regularly carries out sustained, dispersed operations to defend North America across Alaska, Canada, and the continental United States. Recent reports from Canadian media indicated the involvement of a Royal Canadian Air Force group in the NORAD exercise in Greenland. Additionally, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is contemplating deploying more forces to participate in Danish-led sovereignty exercises, which could include drills focusing on protecting the Arctic island’s vital infrastructure.
Amid escalating criticism in Europe following US President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs on eight European nations to further his Greenland ambitions, European countries are toughening their stance. Trump’s social media announcement of a 10% tariff on goods from these countries from February 1, escalating to 25% by June 1, until an agreement is reached for the “complete and total purchase” of Greenland has triggered calls for a united European response and the utilization of countermeasures by the bloc.
