Normalcy is gradually returning to Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district after Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the affected areas and directed officials to provide immediate food assistance to impacted residents. Sangma interacted with locals, assessed the ground situation, and instructed the administration to ensure essential supplies reach communities facing shortages due to the disturbances.

Residents informed the Chief Minister about nearly 17 communities in and around the Araimile locality experiencing shortages of rice and essential commodities following the disruptions. In response, Sangma directed the Deputy Commissioner to work with local committees to prepare a list of affected households for prompt distribution of relief materials. He emphasized the need for immediate support to affected families.

During his visit, Sangma also inspected damaged properties and assured affected residents of government assistance for their shops, homes, or establishments. Meanwhile, residents of Tura engaged in voluntary clean-up efforts to restore normalcy, with community members, youth groups, and local organizations clearing debris and remnants left after the unrest.

The unrest in Tura stemmed from protests against non-tribal participation in the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). Subsequently, the protests escalated into violence in some areas, with reports of vandalism and arson. Security measures have been heightened, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation while collaborating with community leaders to maintain peace and stability in the region.
