North Korea’s economy is reportedly on the path to recovery, as stated by South Korea’s unification ministry. The ministry’s five-year plan for inter-Korean relations highlights the nation’s improved economic situation, attributed to strengthened partnerships with Russia and China. These alliances, especially in high-tech weaponry and technology transfers with Russia, and enhanced relations with China, are seen as pivotal in revitalizing North Korea’s economy.
The unification ministry emphasized North Korea’s efforts to enhance its “strategic autonomy” and “negotiating power” by capitalizing on the escalating rivalry between China and the US. Additionally, the country aims to bolster its diplomatic ties with nations that have historically been friendly towards the regime. This strategic approach is outlined in the ministry’s assessment, which aims to foster a Korean Peninsula free of war and nuclear weapons.
In a separate development, major labor unions from North Korea and Russia have engaged in discussions to strengthen cooperation. The General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia signed a memorandum of understanding during talks in Pyongyang. The agreement focuses on expanding and fortifying exchanges and collaboration between the two countries’ trade unions, aligning with the deepening friendship between North Korea and Russia.
The recent alignment between North Korea and Russia in various sectors, including military support and technology exchange, has been underscored by the visit of a Russian trade union delegation to North Korea. This collaboration has gained momentum, particularly after North Korea dispatched troops to assist Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, leading to reciprocal military and technological support between the two nations.
