Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, declared that North Korea’s position as a nuclear-armed state is irreversible and non-negotiable. She emphasized that this stance is a “line of no retreat” and warned against any threats to the country. Kim Yo-jong’s statement, conveyed through the Korean Central News Agency, reiterated North Korea’s firm commitment to its nuclear weapons program and rejection of international denuclearization efforts.
Ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pyongyang, Kim Yo-jong’s remarks aimed to underscore that North Korea’s nuclear program is not up for discussion between Xi and Kim Jong-un. Responding to US President Donald Trump and Xi’s shared goal of denuclearizing North Korea, Kim Yo-jong dismissed US assertions and accused Washington of spreading false information. She also indicated that Pyongyang had received direct clarification from Beijing regarding discussions between Trump and Xi.
Kim Yo-jong justified North Korea’s military buildup by citing perceived threats from hostile countries, including the US’s recent approval of a potential arms sale to South Korea. She emphasized the country’s focus on enhancing its self-defense capabilities to counter ongoing military threats. Asserting the legality of North Korea’s nuclear forces under its constitution, Kim Yo-jong highlighted nuclear capability as a crucial element in disputes with those who prioritize power, emphasizing the nation’s unwavering commitment to its sovereignty and security.
