Northamptonshire County Cricket Club has extended head coach Darren Lehmann’s contract for the long term. Lehmann, 56, who took charge in October 2024, signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2029 season. Under Lehmann’s leadership, the team made it to the T20 Finals Day in his first season, a significant achievement after nine years.
Lehmann, who initially replaced John Sadler in 2025, had already extended his stay until 2027. The recent contract extension reflects the management’s confidence in his leadership abilities. In a statement, Lehmann expressed his joy in continuing with the club, emphasizing the supportive environment and the club’s familial atmosphere.
Despite a mixed performance last season, including a disappointing One-Day Cup campaign and a near-bottom finish in Division Two of the County Championship, the current season has started positively for Northamptonshire. The team remains unbeaten after three matches and holds the second position in the standings. Lehmann’s extensive experience, including coaching the Australian team and involvement in franchise leagues like the IPL and Big Bash League, adds valuable expertise to the team.
Northamptonshire’s chief executive, Ray Payne, praised Lehmann’s impact on the team’s direction and expressed confidence in his role in shaping the team’s future. Payne highlighted Lehmann’s transparency, connection with supporters, and the positive direction in which he is taking the club. Northamptonshire will aim to continue their good form when they face Worcestershire County Cricket Club in their upcoming County Championship fixture starting on May 1.
