The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is working diligently to launch electric train services between Tripura and Assam soon. Currently, Electric MEMU passenger services are being tested, connecting Agartala with destinations like Dharmanagar, Sabroom, and Karimganj. These six to eight-coach electric MEMU trains are undergoing trial runs on various routes in Tripura and southern Assam to evaluate the newly installed electrification infrastructure.
Railway engineers are meticulously examining voltage levels and technical parameters during these trial operations. Once satisfactory reports are received, the authorities will decide on the regular operation of electric trains on these routes. Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the completion of 100% electrification of the state’s 271-km railway network by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL).
Nath highlighted the historical development of the railway network in Tripura, mentioning the broad-gauge conversion project completed after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014. The international railway link connecting Agartala with Akhaura in Bangladesh was also finalized in 2023. The total broad-gauge railway network in Tripura spans 271 km, connecting Churaibari to Sabroom near the India-Bangladesh border.
Redevelopment work is in progress at four railway stations in Tripura under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. More than 19 trains currently operate from Tripura to various destinations across the country. Trial runs of passenger trains with electric locomotives have been successful, indicating progress towards regular electric passenger train services from Tripura in the near future.
As the electrified railway infrastructure nears completion, plans are underway to extend services of Vande Bharat Express trains up to Silchar in Assam and Agartala in Tripura. To integrate Tripura into the country’s electrified railway network, a Rs 46-crore railway electrification project was initiated in 2022, paving the way for electric train services in the northeastern state.
