The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved significant modernization milestones at its New Bongaigaon workshop in western Assam. The workshop, in December 2025, focused on infrastructure and operational enhancements, aligning with Indian Railways’ broader modernization efforts. The C&W Workshop at New Bongaigaon received recognition from the Ministry of Railways for its outstanding implementation of Rajbhasha, along with a cash award of Rs 14,000.
During December 2025, the New Bongaigaon Workshop developed an indigenous test bench for DEMU DPC bogies, allowing for pre-installation testing of traction motors and early defect detection. The workshop also initiated Mid-Life Rehabilitation (MLR) of LHB coaches, starting with 25 coaches under the Rolling Stock Programme. By optimizing resources and creating interim arrangements, the workshop successfully began MLR activities, with plans for a dedicated MLR shed in progress.
Efforts to enhance operational efficiency at the New Bongaigaon Workshop included relocating all DEMU rakes’ POH activities to a newly commissioned DEMU shed. This move, part of the 2021-22 infrastructure development initiatives, has improved workflow, safety, and productivity. These developments highlight NFR’s commitment to infrastructure, innovation, and operational efficiency, ensuring safe and reliable railway operations.
