The Northeast’s inaugural Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service, connecting Tripura with southern Assam, is set to start commercial operations on Monday. This marks a significant advancement in railway modernization and sustainable transportation in the region. The Agartala-Karimganj MEMU train will run six days a week, excluding Sundays, offering faster, cleaner, and more efficient rail connectivity between the two states.
In a historic moment for Tripura’s railway sector, Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the MEMU electric train service from Agartala Railway Station. He emphasized the importance of this initiative in bolstering the state’s rail infrastructure. Chief Minister Saha credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Act East Policy for the rapid expansion of rail connectivity and infrastructure development in the Northeast.
Chief Minister Saha revealed plans for a double railway track network in Tripura in the coming years, with initial groundwork already in progress. Additionally, efforts are underway to introduce the high-speed Vande Bharat Express in Tripura to further enhance rail connectivity. The state has witnessed significant progress in railway development, with nearly 270 km of railway tracks and the introduction of various long-distance train services connecting Tripura with different parts of the country.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma highlighted that the MEMU train, with modern passenger amenities, can accommodate around 3,600 passengers. This service connects Agartala with Karimganj in Assam and signifies the introduction of the first MEMU train service in the Northeast under the Northeast Frontier Railway. The MEMU train is equipped with modern facilities such as LED lighting, stainless steel coaches, bio-toilets, a GPS-based passenger information system, a public address system, CCTV surveillance, and other advanced features.
The launch of the Agartala-Karimganj MEMU service is a landmark achievement, showcasing NFR’s commitment to providing efficient and eco-friendly rail connectivity. MEMU trains operate on electric traction, offering environmental benefits, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This service is expected to greatly benefit daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders, and tourists by providing a reliable, comfortable, and eco-friendly mode of transport between Tripura and Assam.
