National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) has announced the launch of daily reporting for domestic institutional investor (DII) investment trends to enhance transparency in India’s capital markets. This initiative, guided by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and in collaboration with custodians and SEBI’s Department of Economic and Policy Analysis (DEPA), aims to offer detailed insights into DII investment activities. The new reporting framework will categorically outline DII investment trends, covering Mutual Funds, Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), banks, insurance companies, and other domestic institutional investors.
The move is designed to standardize market data dissemination by aligning DII reporting practices with those of Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs). By implementing daily reporting of DII investment activities, NSDL seeks to ensure consistency, standardization, and reliability in market data dissemination. This aligns with the existing reporting framework for FPIs, allowing stakeholders to closely monitor market sentiment and capital movement trends through daily inflow and outflow data.
Market participants and investors currently monitor daily FPI activities to gauge market sentiment and capital flows. With the introduction of daily DII investment reporting, stakeholders will now have a comprehensive view of domestic institutional investment patterns alongside foreign investment trends. NSDL anticipates that this initiative will enhance the reliability and accessibility of market-related data for investors, analysts, and other participants in India’s financial landscape.
NSDL emphasizes its commitment to enhancing market transparency and providing robust and reliable data insights under regulatory guidance. This development is significant as domestic institutional investors play a crucial role in stabilizing Indian equity markets, often offsetting foreign investor outflows during periods of market volatility. Notably, a recent report from Ventura highlighted that while Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were major net sellers in Jan–Mar 2026, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided substantial support with net inflows during the same period.
