Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed sorrow over the demise of Odia laborers in an ammonia gas leak mishap at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. He extended condolences to the affected families and pledged Rs 4 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the kin of the deceased. State Labor Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia confirmed the death of five Odia workers in the incident and stated that efforts are underway to bring their bodies back to Odisha.
The tragic gas leak incident claimed the lives of seven individuals, including five workers from Odisha’s Keonjhar district. The Odisha government is actively engaged with Tamil Nadu authorities to provide necessary aid to the affected workers. Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg held discussions with her Tamil Nadu counterpart to ensure proper medical care for the injured workers. In response to CM Majhi’s directives, senior Odisha officials are in Tiruvallur to coordinate medical assistance and other essential arrangements for the workers.
The gas leak occurred at a seafood processing and export facility in Kannigaipair village, where a significant number of migrant workers, including individuals from Assam, Odisha, and Jharkhand, were present. The leak, suspected to be from the unit’s refrigeration or processing system, led to breathing difficulties, dizziness, and other severe symptoms among the workers. Authorities are investigating the incident to ascertain the cause and prevent such tragedies in the future.
